Breaking Ground!

Finally. That's right, mid-August when most gardners are beginning to enjoy a harvest of tomatoes and peppers we finally break ground. Our three year lease was finally approved at Thursday's council meeting to begin on August 15. Our pilot project is located on River Road in High Bridge, NJ on the lower lawn of the Solitude House.

At 9:00 this morning we had a slightly overgrown empty slate.

We erected three raised beds and filled them with topsoil:

We removed weeds, created a compost pile, and planted a strawberry patch:

We added organic matter to our raised beds:

And finally planted seeds for swiss chard, beets, lettuce, spinach, zucchini, peas, and collard greens. The result was impressive after only one day's work.
